Shopify Breaks E-Commerce Record

Shopify, one of the largest e-commerce platforms in the world, reported a record-breaking $9.3 billion in sales this Black Friday-Cyber Monday (BFCM) weekend, which was a 24% jump from last year’s numbers.To break things down even further, the peak shopping time throughout that weekend was at 12:01PM E.S.T. At that time, the sales reached a peak of $4.2 million per minute.

The platform had 61 million consumers around the globe shopping on Shopify-powered e-commerce stores, with 76% of online sales coming from mobile purchases. On the brand side, 55,000 businesses had their best-selling day ever on the platform over the course of the past few days.

That’s not all. Shopify did not only act as a sales channel for countless businesses this holiday shopping weekend. They also had their own marketing efforts, which put them on the map, literally. On Small Business Saturday, which sits right between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Shopify took over the Las Vegas Sphere.

The company broadcasted stunning visuals on the Sphere, showcasing a real-time map of all the transactions happening on the platform. There was also a QR code on the sphere, which linked to a live map that showed all the sales being conducted on Shopify stores.

Stripe’s Dashboard Shows Billions in Transactions

Meanwhile, at Stripe, there were also jaw-dropping numbers. Stripe is a financial platform that provides payment systems to a wide variety of businesses. During the BFCM weekend, Stripe processed more than $18.6 billion in payments. The platform’s API operated at an uptime of over 99.999% during the shopping period’s peak, handling 93,304 transactions per minute.

Like Shopify, many of Stripe’s brands hit daily sales records. Over 30,000 of Stripe’s partnered customers achieved all-time highs in terms of sales during BFCM promotions. The growing popularity of Black Friday, Cyber Monday sales has resulted in a 300x increase in transaction volume on Stripe during this time period over the past ten years.
