In a twist of programming, TikTok is using its platform to reduce consumerism by promoting sustainability for Earth Month. By highlighting sustainable Creators and eco-conscious Brands, TikTok is ushering in a new era of earth-friendly content to an app-friendly generation eager to learn, take action, and spread the word through social media. By providing actionable steps and engrossing content, TikTok is spearheading its environmentalist initiative through entertainment, education, and community engagement. This is not the first time TikTok has addressed climate change, and with 45% of Gen Z users responding to conservation content on the platform, it’s proving social change is possible through social media.

5 reminders to help you practice sustainable living each and every day 🌎 Sustainability can often seem like a daunting journey of “do this, or don’t do that.” But it all starts with imperfect action and being willing to learn and change how we view our consumption habits, as well as advocating for change on a larger scale. These reminders have helped me continue to learn and grow through my sustainability journey, and I hope they help and inspire you to do the same😊 1. You can’t buy your way into sustainability because the most sustainable thing is the item you already own (even if it’s not a sustainable item). 2. Ask before you buy to help reduce overconsumption and so that you’re investing your money in items that will actually serve a purpose in your home or in your life. Before buying new, check if you can find it secondhand or reuse/repurpose something you already have. 3. You can take action at home! Whether it’s composting, finding plastic-free alternatives, repairing items to give them a second-life, or even watching a good documentary to continue learning about our planet — little things add up. 4. While corporations will always have a higher carbon footprint than you, our individual actions ABSOLUTELY matter. As consumers, we have buying power with every single purchase we make, but we also have the power of voice to stand up for the change we want to see. 5. GET OUTSIDE! I think getting outdoors and seeing nature for what it is will just make you fall more in love with caring for our planet. Whether that’s your local neighborhood or visiting a state park, there is beauty all around us. If you’re wanting to get started on your sustainability journey but don’t know where to begin, start with finding a cause you’re passionate about! My gateway was learning about fast fashion, but it could be anything from ocean conservation + plastic pollution to animal welfare 🌱 Follow along this Earth Month for more sustainability content focused around how we can all continue to take more action as individuals—and let me know if there is anything specific you want to see / learn! 📝 #earthmonth2023 #sustainableaction #sustainabilityinaction #sustainability
It’s #EarthDay every day
The beauty of slating Earth Month content is that it blends in with regular TikTok content to normalize and popularize sustainable activities that hopefully will become everyday practice. Earth Month is every month we are on this earth, but voicing it through Brands and Creators collectively is a buzz-worthy event that calls for applause. Pushing sustainable content is a pull away from the hyper-consumerist culture that TikTok typically highlights, and using influence to curb consumerism by maximizing a minimalist lifestyle can help prolong life on our planet.
By respecting others, reusing textiles, reducing our carbon footprint, and recycling responsibly, we can make tremendous change through content developed to keep Earth content. What is more, social proof alone can kickstart a domino effect in which people feel compelled to participate in purifying planetary pollution for generations here and to come.
